Most app developers chase keywords that are already won. The winners on the App Store are usually the niches nobody's looking at, high demand, low supply, weak entrenchment in the top apps, recent review velocity that suggests merchants are actively buying. Without a tool to score every category on those signals, you find these niches by accident or not at all.
Four things Niche Explorer unlocks
Every Shopify category scored daily
120+ Shopify App Store categories scored on supply (app count), demand (review velocity), concentration (how dominant the leaders are), and momentum (whether the category is growing). Fresh every morning.
Niche classification badges
Each category is auto-labeled: Emerging (build here), Crowded (hard to break in), Mature (entrenched leaders), Declining (possibly dying), Steady. Sortable + filterable.
Per-category drill-down
Click any niche for: top apps with full metrics, top movers, weekly review-velocity trend, pricing distribution (free vs paid), and an AI-generated verdict + opportunity highlights.
Opportunity-shaped playbooks
Each niche surfaces specific opportunities: feature gaps in the top apps, pricing patterns to exploit, integrations missing in the category, language coverage gaps, and listing-quality gaps you can clear.
The precise capabilities
Not a marketing summary, what the feature actually does, in the same depth a customer success conversation would cover.
The four niche-quality signals
- Supply, how many live apps are in the category. High supply with weak per-app traction signals saturation; low supply with strong demand signals opportunity.
- Demand, recent review velocity, normalized per-app. Tells you which categories merchants are actively buying into right now.
- Concentration, how dominant the leaders are. High concentration means the top apps own the category; lower concentration means room for a new entrant.
- Momentum, whether the category is growing in both new launches and review velocity, or stalling.
The classification badges
- Emerging, small-to-medium supply, strong recent demand, leaders aren't yet entrenched. The clearest 'build here' signal.
- Crowded, high supply but flat or declining per-app demand. Hard to break in; the category leaders are entrenched.
- Mature, high supply, high concentration in the top apps. The category has clear winners and the install math favors them.
- Declining, both supply and demand are slowing. Possibly a dying niche.
- Steady, stable on every signal. Not exciting, but real.
What the drill-down shows
- Headline metrics, total apps, average rating, total reviews, badge count, concentration in the top apps.
- Top apps, name, rating, review count, BFS status, age. The competitors you'd be benchmarked against.
- Top movers, apps in the category that gained the most reviews recently. The momentum stories worth watching.
- Weekly review trend, a chart of category review velocity over time.
- Pricing distribution, share of category apps with a free plan, common pricing tiers.
- Age stats, median age of live apps in the category.
- AI-generated verdict, one-paragraph synthesis of what the data says about the category.
- AI-generated highlights, three to five specific opportunities visible in the data (e.g. 'No app in this category supports French', 'Top 3 are all priced under $20, there's room for a premium tier').

Frequently asked
How is 'under-served' measured?
An opportunity score across four signals: supply (low is better), demand (strong recent activity is better), concentration (lower means room to enter), and momentum (positive trend on activity matters more than raw size). The combination becomes the opportunity score.
What's a niche classification badge?
An auto-assigned label based on where the category sits on the four signals: Emerging (build here), Crowded (hard to break in), Mature (clear winners), Declining (possibly dying), or Steady. Sortable and filterable.
What does the per-category drill-down show?
Top apps, top movers, weekly review trend, pricing distribution, age stats, and an AI-generated verdict + opportunity highlights synthesizing the data into actionable next steps.
How often does the data update?
Every morning. The scoring runs against the latest available data, so you see today's numbers each time you check.
Why is so much locked on Free?
Niche Explorer is one of the highest-leverage surfaces we ship, the category recommendations alone can change which product someone decides to build. We keep the structure visible so you understand the feature, but the specifics are part of Starter and Pro.
